May 2026 Tony Lyons on History of Cardigan Bay tourism

Post by QuentinDeakin »

The member-chosen topic of the society's first meeting of the season, which attracted a large audience of members and visitors, was the development of the coastal resorts of Cardigan Bay as a tourist destination from the eighteenth century to the present. The speaker, Dr Tony Lyons, gave an excellent, wide-ranging and detailed, illustrated talk entitled 'The history of Caravans and Holiday-making in Cardigan Bay'.

He began with the eighteenth century fashion of the wealthy to take advantage of the health-giving properties of sea bathing and spa treatments, setting it in its European context. Greater access was provided by the opening of the Cambrian railway line. Social legislation first provided weekends and later statutory holidays for the middle and working classes, enabling them to take advantage of the resorts. Tony focused on four resorts in mid-west Wales; Barmouth, Tywyn, Aberdyfi and Aberystwyth. After listing the attractions of each, he concentrated on the evolution of the caravan from horse-drawn early models (resembling gypsy caravans) to car-towed versions, up to present-day statics. In parallel, the early cara-bung (caravan-bungalow) has evolved to the present-day chalets and luxury glamping pods.

The topic was of great interest to the audience, many of whom are involved, either as users or owners of local caravan sites. Others had precious childhood memories. A lively discussion followed and Tony was warmly thanked.

The society's next meeting, on Monday June 15th, will be on the theme of Welsh folklore. The speaker will be Emeritus Professor Miranda Aldhouse Green from Cardiff University. All welcome.
