The society’s first meeting of 2021 on 18th January was a Zoom presentation by Dr John Hirst on the nineteenth-century development of coastal resorts from Aberystwyth to Pwllheli. The talk was lavishly illustrated by contemporary postcards, other rare documents and extracts from the accounts of visitors who came by coach, after the opening of the Cambrian Line by rail and by early motor vehicles. As well as stops at all major towns en route, John extended his range to tourist excursions inland to attractions such as the Roman Steps and Snowdon. The talk gave not only a comprehensive exposition of the history and built environment but also an account of the effects of these changes on local inhabitants.

At this sad and difficult time of lock-down this much-appreciated virtual journey was significant and refreshing as we look forward to better times. The next meeting by Zoom is on Monday 15th February.
