On Monday 21st June the society enjoyed a talk entitled 'St David Up-to-Date: The Cult of Lloyd George' by Dr Neil Evans of the Harlech Historical Society. The importance of David Lloyd George to the political history of Britain in the twentieth century cannot be over-estimated. Dr Evans did full justice to his charismatic subject and to his achievements but did not ignore the complexities of his character and legacy. He was undoubtedly the greatest political speaker of his day. At the time of his greatest popularity, just before and during the last years of the First World War DLG was very popular in Wales and seen as the embodiment of the Welsh nation - a celebrity politician. However, his response to the Sankey report after the war, which, had it been implemented in full, would have improved the lot of the coal miners, made him far less popular in south Wales. He retained his popularity in the north in spite of increasing talk of his personal infidelities.
