At the society's meeting on Monday 21st November Dr John Hirst gave a comprehensive, well illustrated account of the life and times of self-made salt baron and Liberal MP for Droitwich, owner of Ynysymaengwyn in Tywyn from 1878 to 1901.
This lecture was a companion piece to Dr Deakin's October talk on equally noted previous unrelated owner Edward Corbet. Both men played a significant role in the development of Tywyn and the local area leaving and indelible mark. As well as emphasising the importance of Corbett's contributions Dr Hirst also considered the considerable role of the local government and other local beneficiaries in the improvement of Tywyn in the late nineteenth century. John's excellent talk, delivered with great panache, was enjoyed by all and he was warmly thanked.
